Sports Performance
Improve your technique | Safely transition from physical therapy back to sport
Injury Prevention | Shorten post-workout recovery time
For athletes looking to improve their technique, transition safely from physical therapy back to their sport, assess their movements to prevent injury, or shorten their post-workout recovery time, our sports performance assessments and services can help. These include: Gait Analysis, Overhead Athlete Assessment, TPI Golf Assessment, Post Rehab Strength Program, Cycling, Football, Lacrosse, CrossFit, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, and Yoga
Gait Analysis
Improve your speed, prevent injury, and boost your overall performance
Physical therapy can help runners improve their speed, prevent injury, and boost their overall performance. A run gait analysis allows us to take a close look at a runner’s form to determine imbalances that could cause pain or lead to injury. Using motion-capture technology, we’ll assess a runner’s form frame-by-frame to determine if there are any faulty mechanics, and with that data, we’ll create an individualized program to correct imbalances. FX Physical Therapy can also provide instruction on how to safely perform cross-training exercises to improve running performance.
Overhead Athlete Assessment
Baseball & Softball
Overhead athletes are at high risk for shoulder injuries, so injury prevention for these athletes is key. An overhead athlete assessment uses a video analysis to conduct a full movement screen of the athlete’s throwing, pitching, or swinging to assess poor posture or joint biomechanics that could lead to injury. If we spot any dysfunctions, we’ll create a sports-specific exercise plan to help athletes correct faulty movement patterns and avoid future overhead injuries. Our overhead-sports experts can also recommend strength-training exercises that are specific to the demands of the athlete’s sport to improve performance.
TPI Golf Assessment
Analyze posture, swing, and other movement mechanics to determine any faulty movement patterns or risk for injury
It’s all about power and precision. For golf players with back, hip, wrist, or shoulder pain, or those who just want to reach peak performance, our golf-specific assessment can analyze posture, swing, and other movement mechanics to determine any faulty movement patterns or risk for injury. Based on the assessment, we can prescribe corrective exercises to alleviate pain and adjust movement for ideal performance.
Post Rehab Strength Program
Training to help athletes slowly regain the strength and endurance they need to avoid future injury.
When an athlete recovers after an injury or surgery, there can be lag time between finishing physical therapy and getting back in the game. Our facilities and partnerships with the Under Armour Performance Centers allows us to bridge the gap between physical therapy and performance. We offer targeted training to help athletes regain the strength and endurance they need to avoid future injury and perform at their best.
Cycling
Physical therapy can help you go further, faster, and improve your performance on the bike
Our physical therapists help with bike fitting to optimize proper movement and joint angles. We also offer programming assistance for proper training progression and muscle isolation for improved power and efficient pedal stroke. Additionally, spine mobilization and soft tissue work can improve your posture on and off the bike.
Football
Football is a full-contact, high-collision sport that can often take a toll on the body. Specific individualized care is required based on the demands of each position. At FX Physical Therapy, a plan of care can be tailored for each football player that requires our attention. For the all-too-common traumatic knee and ankle injuries that can affect workhorse running backs, to low back pain and shoulder injuries that bug gritty linemen, to those nagging hamstring injuries that just won’t go away for speedy receivers and defensive backs, to any shoulder or elbow injury that may be impeding quarterbacks from throwing-the PTs at FX can develop a plan for you. FX Physical Therapy also has experts in concussion rehabilitation that are up to date on the newest research and most innovative treatments. With FX Physical Therapy, you no longer have to battle through pain, we can help you get back on the field and playing pain-free as quickly as possible.
Lacrosse
Ensure that you are performing at your very best and ready for the challenges, sudden impact from various angles, and field conditions
Lacrosse is the nation’s oldest team sport, and Maryland is a hot bed for “laxers” to compete at every level. Lacrosse is a physically demanding game which requires an incredible combination of strength, agility, power, speed, and endurance. Physical Therapy can bridge the gap between injury and return to sport, offer injury prevention strategies, and sports performance rehabilitation.
Our Sports Physical Therapists can help ensure that you are performing at your very best, to get you running faster, shooting harder, and as agile as ever. Whether you just want to enjoy your lacrosse experience or seeking higher level performance for varsity, collegiate, or professional athletic career, we can help!
CrossFit
What Causes Injury in CrossFit Athletes?
CrossFit is an intense workout, asking athletes to perform multiple repetitions within a limited time. Competent coaching, multiple options for scaling, a good warm up, and mindful programming all greatly reduce the risk of injury. Many injuries we’ve seen in CrossFit result from an athlete being unaware of their personal limits and/or from volume overload. CrossFit is a sustainable sport when athletes remember that not every workout should be an all-out max effort. Remember: form over everything.
Soccer
Improve your speed, prevent injury, and boost your overall performance
Soccer is a rough, high-contact sport, but unlike football and hockey, players aren’t required to wear more padding than shin guards to protect them from injury. The game’s quick and intense pace demands a lot from athletes and injuries are very common. These injuries can happen without warning, and tend to occur in the athlete’s lower extremity when he/she plants to take a free kick, sprints after a loose ball, or tackles to win control of the ball.
Therapists can utilize video analysis to conduct a full movement screen of the athlete’s running and kicking motion to assess poor posture or joint biomechanics that could lead to injury. If we spot any dysfunctions, we’ll create a sport-specific exercise plan to help athletes correct faulty movement patterns and avoid future injuries.
Our sports medicine experts can also recommend strength training exercises that are specific to the demands of the athlete’s sport to improve performance.
Swimming
Swimming — the never ending season! Practices + dryland sessions… you can literally train more times then there are days in the week. All that time in the water has a tendency to lead to overuse injuries galore! The repetitive nature of the sport can lead athletes to overdevelop the chest musculature and under-develop muscles in the middle back. These muscular changes alter a person’s posture and put swimmers in a prime position for impingement of the rotator cuff or biceps tendon. This impingement (aka “swimmer’s shoulder”) can lead to pain at the shoulder that sometimes refers all the way down the arm. Our physical therapists can offer strengthening and range of motion techniques to help endure the demands of such an intense sport and keep you swimming pain free!
Tennis
We currently help many tennis players improve their USTA ranking by treating pain and dysfunction, preventing injury, and improving racket speed, serve speed, and overall performance. We offer services to treat tennis elbow and shoulder pain, as well as common tennis injuries involving the ankle, calf, and achilles. and help with agility and speed training to improve on-the-court mobility.
Yoga
Allow your body to move more freely and improve flexibility
Oftentimes, Americanized yoga teaches yogis to try and achieve the most movement possible, rather than encouraging them to listen to their bodies. Physical therapy can help you move holistically by stabilizing hyper-mobilities to allow better flow through your poses and guide you through safe and effective movement patterns. Soft tissue work and spine and joint mobilization will allow your body to move more freely and improve flexibility. We will help incorporate your yoga practice into your treatment and fitness plan to maximize improvements.
