Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a non-invasive peripheral stimulation technique used to relieve pain. During TENS pulsed electrical currents are delivered across the intact surface of the skin to activate underlying nerves.

The NormaTec PULSE Recovery System

The NormaTec PULSE Recovery System consists of a compression device that surrounds your arms, legs, or hips. These compression units then utilize compressed air to massage your limbs, leading to mobilized fluid and faster recovery and recuperation following intense exertion.

Percussion Therapy

Percussion Therapy is a state-of-the-art vibration massage device that relieves muscle stiffness and soreness, increases circulation and range of motion, and improves the overall health of the body’s soft tissue.

Myofascial decompression (MFD), or cupping

Myofascial decompression (MFD), or cupping is an advanced therapeutic technique that can be used to treat soft tissue injuries and increase flexibility. MFD is a negative pressure soft tissue treatment technique using suction to manipulate the skin and underlying soft tissues.  It is a great option for sore and tight muscles that have not responded to traditional massage techniques.

Intramuscular Manual Therapy/ Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling

Myofascial trigger point dry needing or intramuscular manual therapy is a useful technique to decrease acute and chronic pain.  IMT enhances the effectiveness of other physical therapy interventions, such as neuromuscular re-education.

Myofascial trigger points are taut bands in skeletal muscle and fascia. Janet Travell, MD identified myofascial trigger points as being a source of referred pain. For example, sustained pressure to the trigger points in the upper trapezius muscle can elicit pain in the head, neck, and shoulder.

Some people suffering from myofascial trigger points develop allodynia (painful response to a non-painful stimulus) and hyperalgesia (increased pain response). IMT is a useful technique to decrease acute and chronic pain by improving blood flow and oxygen to the muscle.  This then leads to improved movement and performance.

IMT involves inserting a filiform needle directly into the involved myofascial trigger points. A local twitch response occurs during IMT that increases the relaxation of the involved musculature. The patient may feel a sensation in the areas where their pain often radiates. As the client’s soft tissue becomes more mobile, referred pain from the associated trigger point decreases or is eliminated altogether.

This advanced technique can be combined with electrical stimulation to enhance the effects of the treatment. This combination causes a gentle contraction and relaxation of the irritable muscle, which helps the muscle relax further.

Following IMS, soreness may last up to 24-48 hours similar to the feeling after a challenging work out.

Research has shown that IMT is an effective technique for decreasing pain and increasing function in patient populations such as cervical and lumbar radiculopathy due to herniated discs, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, temporomandibular disorder, fibromyalgia, whiplash, headache, and a host of other neuromusculoskeletal disorders.

Only our most experienced and highly trained doctors of physical therapy utilize this technique when deemed medically appropriate.  As a Recovery Zone service, Dry Needling may only be performed after a Physical Therapy examination has been completed.

Myofascial Release/ Stretching Session

Myofascial release is a type of gentle, constant massage that releases tightness and pain throughout your myofascial tissues. First, your healthcare provider will locate assess for restrictions in your personal myofascial system.  Then, they will gently apply proven techniques to eliminate tension and knots in your muscles leaving you feeling amazing.
